Cameroon international Patrick Ekeng has died on the pitch whilst playing for his club Dinamo Bucharest in a televised Romanian league match against Viitorul Constanta on Friday night.

The 26-year-old collapsed on the field after 70 minutes of the game and despite efforts to revive him, he died of a suspected heart attack and he was later pronounced dead in hospital.

His former club Cordoba CF in Spain tweeted: "We have no words to express our sadness at the loss of Patrick Ekeng. We mourn your loss."

Ekeng isn't the first Cameroon international to die whilst playing. In 2003 Marc-Vivien Foe collapsed and died while playing in a Confederations Cup match against Columbia in France.

A statement on Dinamo's official Facebook page said: "Dinamo tonight lost footballer Claude Patrick Ekeng Ekeng forever.

"On behalf of all of Dinamo, sincere condolences to the bereaved family. God rest his soul."

Ekeng had only been on the field for seven minutes after coming on as a 62nd-minute substitute.

Ekeng spent last season at Spanish side Cordoba having previously played for Lausanne, Le Mans and Canon Yaounde.
