Watch Gwen Stefani, Stephen Colbert Argue About ‘Bananas’ Spelling
Gwen Stefani served as musical guest on the Friday night episode of Late Show With Stephen Colbert, where the singer entered into a backstage argument with the host about the spelling of the word ‘bananas’ in the song “Hollaback Girl.” Colbert first informed Stefani that the 2005 single was banned from Late Show for a ridiculous reason.
“It’s one of my favorite songs. I’m just kind of a stickler when it comes to spelling, and I don’t know if you know it, but in the song, you spell ‘bananas’ wrong,” Colbert said. Stefani then spells out the fruit “B-A-N-A-N-A-S,” but Colbert countered that it’s actually spelled “B-A-N-N-A-N-A-S.”
“Stephen, look, I think I know a little more about bananas than you do,” Stefani told Colbert, who fired back “Gwen, with all due respect, just because you wrote a song about bananas doesn’t mean you’re an expert.” Stefani then dropped some serious banana knowledge on the host.
When Stefani finally did the Late Show stage, she performed “Make Me Like You,” the first single off her new LP This Is What the Truth Feels Like.
