Health activists join forces in bid to reform Medical Council of India

Public health activists in India have launched a coalition to try to reform the Medical Council of India, the often criticised and controversial regulator of medical education and ethics.
The council has been under scrutiny since the arrest in 2010 of a former chair, Ketan Desai, on corruption charges. In March a parliamentary committee condemned the council on several grounds in a report submitted to the Indian parliament. It said that the regulator could no longer be trusted with its responsibilities because of its “massive failures.”1
