Sania Mirza, Rohan Bopanna continued their fine run at the Madrid Open on Thursday while it was curtains for Mahesh Bhupathi.
Playing in women’s doubles with Martina Hingis, Mirza kept the momentum going in the Spanish capital to dispatch sixth seeds Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka 6-3, 6-2 in a little over an hour to seal their place in the semi-finals.
Ever since their 41-match winning streak ended in Doha, the Indo-Swiss pairing have had quick exits on the hard courts.
They did come back to reach the finals of Stuttgart but left trophy-less.
Now after four tournaments without silverware, the World No.1 pairing would be keen to get back into form as they head into French Open.
They next face Vania King and Alla Kudryavtseva who had to battle it out in a much closer encounter.
On the men’s doubles front, there was good news for Bopanna and his partner Florin Mergea who beat Pablo Cuevas and Marcel Granollers 6-7, 6-4, 10-4 in the second round of a match that lasted nearly an hour and a half.
They next face Henri Kontinen and John Peers who upset number two seeds Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares.
For Bhupathi and his partner Fabrice Martin, the run at the Caja Magica ended with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-10 loss to Alexander Peya and Nenad Zimonjic.
French Open begins on 16 May.
