1920 London movie review: You can definitely give this Meera Chopra - Sharman Joshi horror drama a miss!

The horror-thriller film is anything but scary.

Shivangi (Meera Chopra) and Veer Singh (Vishal Karwal) belong to royal families of Rajasthan and are happily married in London.Shivangi comes down to Rajasthan to tell her parents about the tragedy that has befallen her. She tells them that her husband has become a victim of black magic and she suspects her step mother-in-law is involved in this. Instead of confronting her in-laws face-to-face, her family approaches a tantric baba (exorcist). The baba fails to help them and declares that the spirit is uncontrollably powerful and suggests them to contact Jay of Mewar, who according to him, is suitable for this case. Sensing her family’s resistance towards contacting Jay, Shivangi decides to find him all by herself. Jay turns out to be her ex-lover who has now become a famous exorcist. Although he holds a grudge against her for deserting him and then sending him to jail in the past, he agrees to help her after being reminded of his duty to serve the humanity. Will he be able to help Shivangi in getting rid of the ghost who possessed her husband is what the rest of the humdrum plot is all about... What’s hot:

Sharman Joshi is good as an exorcist. The scenes shot in London will transport you to a different world. Falguni Thakore has done a good job with the costumes with regards to the film's period setting. Harish Shetty clearly tried to do something different with the choreography as he made the couple romance in a cotton field instead of the conventional mustard fields, which was refreshingly pleasant. Songs are nice and give the viewers a good relief from the dramatic plot.Among the songs, it's the recreated Gumnaam hai Koi from the 1965 film Gumnaam, that stands out.

What’s not:

While the film had a good twist post interval, it wasn’t that surprising. The twist was almost predictable since we knew the flashback sequences of Shivangi and Jay's past will definitely have some role to play in the proceedings. The film follows a very formulaic and predictable pattern after that twist scene. Except for the gender reversal, as here the wife is saving the husband, the plot is almost similar to the first 1920 film. The conclusion also lacked the required impact, that you expect from a horror thriller.

Meera Chopra was a decked up damsel in distress. Her acting and dialogue delivery were totally bland. The spirit looked so make-believe that left you anything but scared. Unlike the previous films, where the ghost had a motive to possess someone, here it is just used as a tool to exact revenge. The chemistry between the actors was disappointing especially in the romantic songs which looked more like a montage of famous Bollywood-couple gestures.

What to do:

Needless to say, the latest entry in the 1920 series disappoints big time, with Sharman Joshi being the only saving grace. Watch the film only if you don't have anything else to do.
