New Delhi, May 7 (UNI) Thousands of Congress workers descended on Jantar Mantar for a high voltage 'March for Democracy' during which party chief Sonia Gandhi, vice-president Rahul Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh courted arrest and were released after brief detention. Buses filled with workers from Delhi and adjoining states started reaching here for the mega rally that kicked off at 0900 hrs. Flashing placards reading 'Loktantra Bachao(Save Democarcy)' and 'Modi Sarkar Haye Haye,' (Shame on Modi Government)', the workers raised slogans against the central government saying 'Tanashashi nahi chalegi(Dictator ship will not be tolerated)', many senior leaders, including Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mallikarjun Kharge, Motilal Vohra, Digvijay Singh, Oscar Fernandes, AK Antony from the central command and states joined the rally, which resulted in chocking of traffic in and around the Parliament Street. The rally was also addressed by other senior Congress leaders, including the party president, Mr Gandhi, Mr Singh Mallikarjun Kharge, Ghulam Nabi Azad , Jyotiraditya Scindia, Ajay Maken, Raj Babbar and others. The speakers, while addressing a massive gathering, attacked the Modi government for 'murdering democracy' and indulging in 'mud-slinging.' Shortly after making blistering attack on the Modi government, Ms Gandhi, the Nehru-Gandhi scion and Mr Singh took out the march along with other senior leaders towards Parliament and courted arrest. They were shortly released by police. As the senior leadership went inside Parliament Street Police Station, many party leaders such as Renuka Chaudhary climbed on railing of police station and raised slogans against the central government. Soon after the senior leadership was released, the NSUI and youth Congress broke the first line of barricades and tried to march towards Parliament. However, they were later stopped by police.
