Steps taken to view rare celestial event

The Anna Science Centre Planetarium in the city is making arrangements for the public to safely view the rare celestial event on May 9 when Planet Mercury will transit the Sun.

In a press release, I.K.Lenin Tamil Kovan, project director of the Planetarium said the phenomenon on an average occurs 13 times a century. The last transit happened in 2006. Members of the public and students can view the transit safely at the planetarium from 4.42 p.m. up to sunset on May 9. Entry will be free, he said.

Booth slip distribution begins in Tiruchi dt.

Distribution of booth slips to voters began in the district on Thursday. The electorate of 21,56,033 in the nine constituencies would be issued the booth slips through booth level officers, Collector K.S.Palanisamy said in a press release. Booth level officers would be required to obtain the signatures of voters on handing over the slips, he said. The exercise would be completed by May 10, he added.

Six expenditure observers appointed

The following six expenditure observers have been appointed by the Election Commission to monitor the expenditure of the candidates contesting the Assembly elections in the nine constituencies in the district, a release said: Manveet Sehgal (Tiruchi West and Tiruchi East; contact number 7598021035); Kishor (Manachanallur, Musiri and Thuraiyur - 9446176012); Pradhamesh (Tiruverumbur and Lalgudi - 7598021037); Mandeep Singh Parmarar (Srirangam - 9488062600); Kali Charan (Manapparai - 7598021033) and Rajeshkumar (Thuraiyur – 7598021042).
