Shivamogga deputy commissioner CVP Ikkeri, who ordered the ZP chief to investigate the allegation of animal sacrifice, said he's yet to receive his report. The local PDO visited the village and heard the views of residents and will submit a report shortly. "Based on the report, I'll take action," he said.
'State must act'
A large number of people, Sanskrit scholars, women and youth opposed animal sacrifice during festivals, celebrations and in yajnas, and urged people to oppose this.
They also asked the state government to implement the existing law strictly. Members of outfits working to prevent cruelty to animals and animal welfare organizations also opposed it.
Among those who opposed it were Hosahalli Venkatram, musician; Pattabhi Ram, social reformer of Mattur; Aswathanaraya Avadhani and Ganesh Avadhani, both renowned Sanskrit scholars of Mattur; Komala, a women volunteer and homemaker in the village; Srinivas, a medical practitioner in Shivamogga and Pramatha, a final BCom student of the village.
