Patna Police is pulling out all stops in its battle to keep the state liquor free. After getting breath-analysers to nab violators, a plan is now afoot to introduce a panic button in the mobile phones of auto and cab drivers ferrying passengers from the airport. The panic button will allow the driver to alert the police if he suspects that the passenger is carrying liquor bottles.

“Even though we have requested the airport authority to randomly check luggage of passengers coming to Patna, we are introducing mobile panic button system to further minimise chances of passengers bringing liquor bottles to Bihar through air route,” Patna SSP Manu Maharaj told The Indian Express.

He added that just knowing about the system was likely to discourage passengers from bringing liquor to Bihar, which enforced complete liquor ban on April 5 this year.

The SSP said the district administration had engaged a private company to introduce the panic button system.

“Once the alert goes to the nearest police station or the police control room, a police patrol team will reach the spot after tracking the driver, who will be instructed to drive slowly,” said the SSP, adding that the district police had already introduced the panic button system to check eve-teasing.

Festive offer

As per the plan, nearly 50 auto drivers and as many taxi drivers will have the panic button system on their mobile phones within a month.

Patna District Magistrate Sanjay Kumar Agrawal added: “We have gone all out to enforce the liquor ban. We conducted a session with airport officials and security officers to introduce breath-analysers. We are also requesting various airlines to scan out liquor bottles from Patna-bound passengers. We will use breath-analysers only on suspicion and conduct random check on luggage to avoid inconvenience to passengers”.

DM said “no knowledge” of the liquor ban in Bihar will be “no excuse” for violators.

“A passenger caught with liquor bottle on arrival or before departure will be immediately handed over to the CISF that will hand over the offender to Patna police. However, if a passenger voluntarily surrenders a liquor bottle to the CISF on arrival in Patna, no case would be filed against him”, said the DM.

In its drive to enforce the liquor ban, the Bihar Police has so far registered about 1,500 cases under the Bihar Excise (Amendment) Act, 2016, and arrested about 1,300 people. About 1,100 of them are in jails.
