David Bowie's Blackstar Reveals Hidden Image When Left In The Sun

David Bowie

David Bowie left behind a hidden surprise in the vinyl version of his final studio album Blackstar.

A Reddit user recently discovered that if the Blackstar vinyl gatefold is left out in the sun, it changes from the standard black star design to a full starfield. According to another post on the same thread, the effect is seen when a bright light is shined through the back of the cover, since a difference in the thickness of the paper causes a bleed-through of the starfield on the inside of the cover.

Bowie meant Blackstar as "a parting gift for his fans." In an interview with Jonathan Barnbrook, the designer of the cover, at the time of the album's release, he said Bowie "always wanted to do something interesting, often to the annoyance of the record company."
