New-Age Electro-Pop Fusion band Violet Chords speaks about their journey
Brainchild of singer and songwriter Reenie Mansata and bass guitarist Sheldon DSilva, who were great friends before they came on board for the project, the band is a year old. Reenie, who had performed with some renowned names from the west namely, David Anthony, Livingstone Brown, Maxi Priest was looking at taking her songs on the road with a live and exciting sound.
I had to reproduce the music in a way that could be executed live. Sheldon being an established touring session musician had played with the likes of Louiz Banks, Zakir Hussain, Al Jarreau, Mike Stern and Guthrie Govan to name a few and I couldnt think of anyone better than him, says Reenie.
Once Sheldon heard the tunes, he was inspired to recreate them in a way that could be performed live with improvisation. To execute this, they felt it was best to collaborate with Gino Banks (drummer), Tubby (pianist) and Ravi Chary (sitarist), who are some of the finest musicians in the country with remarkable individual feats to their credit.

Talking about the bands name, they explain about its spiritual context where violet is the colour of the seventh chakra, which is ones crown chakra, and connects people to their higher self. On the other hand, a chord is three or more notes bound together musically, which, in literal terms, stands for elements or people having a bond harmoniously. So together, its a connection between spirituality and music, and Violet Chords thus means divine music!
On their a-ha moment: Listening to the music in its new avatar as interpreted by Sheldon and Tubby was an exhilarating experience for the members. When we launched the band at night clubs in Mumbai and Pune to a packed house, it was extremely special to us. Receiving great feedback from producers in the US was an additional confirmation that we are on the right track with a promising project in hand, says Reenie.
On their brand of music:
Coming with their own style of music, the artistes take on new-age electro-pop fusion and merge it with live improvisation so listeners get to hear the best of both, the digital and the analogue world.
On their musical influences: With diverse backgrounds and their own set of experiences, their families and friends have been the greatest source of influence. Weve had many mentors along the way who have inspired us to write new music and challenge ourselves at every step. We believe that music happens when you are not comfortable and being innovative is the core essence of an artiste. Also, we inspire each other by bringing new ideas to the table and learning from each other, says Sheldon.
On their way ahead: The band will continue performing live even as they plan to release these songs as an album in the future. Simultaneously, they are also planning on a series of concerts.
