Be it the easy on the ears A Team by Ed Sheeran or Amy Winehouses resigned and heartbreaking Back to Black, Soundaryas voice befits both and more.
Born in Bangalore, she moved to Muscat with her family at the age of four. Exposed to a variety of music at home itself, she never had to go out seeking inspiration. During weekends, I would wake up to my dad playing all kinds of songs.
Add to this, my cousins were all metalheads and would listen to a lot of rock. With these mixed influences, somewhere along, I picked bits of everything, she says. To get started, she started taking lessons in Carnatic music at the age of 10. Occasionally strumming a few chords of guitar with her father piqued her interest in that, too, and soon, she started taking lessons for it. Currently a blues guitarist, she attributes her success to her family and happens to be the first one in her family to take up music professionally. As a teenager, she returned to Bangalore to pursue her college studies and joined AR Rahmans institute in Chennai for a certificate course in vocal performance post her graduation.

With a diverse range from Carnatic to classical western opera and western contemporary she doesnt want to stick to a particular genre. She says, Blues comes very naturally to me whereas rock pushes my range. But Im always out for exploring things. Talking about the kind of music she loves, Soundarya says, I love classical and listen to a lot of pop, soul, blues, alternative and ambient music, but Im not very high on heavy stuff. I may love the technicalities but Alicia Keys and John Mayers compositions define my kind of music.
Also a songwriter, her lyrics are an outlet of her innermost feelings, however trivial. This, I do not just as a musician but also as a person. Anything that liberates me from my past and speaks my mind becomes a part of my song. For instance, if Ive been too busy, Ill write something that says that I want a break. But just like every other artiste, lyrics dont come easy to me and when I want them to, she says.
While she already has an EP to her credit (a five songs album titled Shades of Revival), she wants to write more before she takes the leap and comes out with another one. Relating her style and vibe with Rihanna, she wishes to jam with her favourite vocalists, John Mayer and Adam Levine some time.
