WAY back in 1902 the then broadsheet Lithgow Mercury commissioned a special Christmas lift out featuring sketches of possibly all of the city’s businesses and industries.
It was printed to a level of full colour that was quite remarkable for the time.
Only two of the historic documents are known to exist; one in the collection at Eskbank House and another on display at the Mercury Office after being discovered in a cavity wall during building renovations at the Mercury back in the 1980s.
Now, 114 years after those pioneering graphic artists completed their task their work lives again in street art in Lithgow.
Some months ago Council conferred with the Mercury with a plan to use the old art work in Cook Plaza.
This week specialists in the field completed a remarkable task in ‘wrapping’ extracts from the screen printed liftout around the walls of the new state of the art public amenities block in the plaza.
It looks spectacular and absolutely unique and has totally transformed what had previously been criticised in the Mercury as a bland addition to a CBD focal point.
The mural is an early stage in council’s CBD revitalisation program that will have Cook Plaza as a centrepiece.
