Ask the country’s first choice national team goalkeeper and he is perfectly tongue in cheek, saying “No. I am taller than him!”
But in reality the Stabaek FC custodian is becoming a Cup game regular for the Norwegian outfit much like FC Barcelona’s German keeper ter Stegen who plays in all of their Champions League games. Chilean Claudio Bravo is Barca’s first choice keeper in La Liga.
So far the Mohali-born goalie has started in all three of Stabaek’s Cup Games, the latest being a 3-0 triumph over second tier side Bærum SK.This was Gurpreet’s first clean sheet of the season.
The former East Bengal keeper played his first Cup game of the season against third-tier outfit Korsvoll IL. Stabaek won 4-1. He followed it up with a 7-1 pummelling of Sarpsborg 08 FF.
“It feels good. But I want to play in the league games as well,” Gurpreet said.
The only Indian footballer to be playing abroad for two years now, the Leicester City miracle must have inspired him to do more.
“I have done a Leicester before Leicester!
“No one in India thought I could survive in Europe for so long but I did. I played for a top tier side in a Cup game which was a first. I captained a European side’s reserve team. It takes a lot of hard work and self-belief to be doing all this against the odds.
“But of course the Leicester City story shows that nothing is impossible,” he said.
Gurpreet, who created history last year by becoming the first Indian to start for a first division European side, is looking forward to the Europa League qualifiers later this year where he will again be the first Indian to be part of a Europa League qualifiers playing side’s squad for Stabaek.
