Mudslide In Eastern Uzbekistan Kills Five

A massive mudslide that covered a road in Uzbekistan's eastern region of Namangan has killed five people.

Uzbekistan's Ministry for Emergency Situations said on May 5 that the victims were traveling in cars that were buried by the mud in the mountainous region.

The ministry said six people survived the ordeal, which happened at about 2 p.m. on May 4.

The mudslide occurred within the Kamchik pass along part of the highway that connects Tashkent with Kyrgyzstan's southern city of Osh.

Melting ice and snow in the mountains often causes mudslides in the area during the spring.
