They were functioning without proper licences

Officials of Chennai Corporation’s Health Department shut down eateries at the food court of Ampa Skywalk Mall on Poonamallee High Road here on Wednesday.

No licence

A senior official of the department said that the outlets and restaurants had been functioning without a proper licence.

“This is a violation of schedule 6 of the Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act 1919 which states that the outlets should have got a licence from the Corporation to function. While six outlets obtained licences, 26 couldn’t as they did not meet the norms,” he said.

Notices stuck outside the restaurants stated that they had been shut for the day by the Health Department and cited lack of licence and hygiene.

Undertaking from outlets

The owners of the 26 outlets have given a written undertaking to the department stating that they would obtain the requisite licences within the next two weeks.

“A competent authority will have to consider the undertaking and take a decision as to whether the restaurants and shops can start functioning again till they obtain the licences,” an official said.
