Bitter pill to swallow for LDF-ruled corp
Thiruvananthapuram: The city corporation, which has been struggling to sustain decentralised waste management, is now reaching out to government organizations, departments and NGOs to revive the campaign.
In the mission, the LDF-led ruling council has prioritised waste management over the party's stand against Vizhinjam project. The civic body will launch a decentralised waste management campaign in the harbour area at Vizhinjam with the assistance from Vizhinjam international seaport limited (VISL) and Adani group.
CPM has always been aggressive in raising corruption allegations against the project. A senior member of the ruling council, however, said that the tie-up was part of a policy for common good by collaborating with the government agencies.
Aerobic bins will be installed with the support of tourism department at major tourism spots including Shanghumugham, Veli and Kovalam. The corporation will tie-up with Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) to install waste management units based on composting in areas like Poundukadavu and Pallithura, which have been littered with waste from slaughterhouses.Mayor V K Prashanth said dumping of waste on roadsides could be addressed with the assistance from VSSC.
Five NGOs have been roped in to monitor composting units being set up at households.
During the tenure of previous ruling council, the corporation had found private sponsors to fund installation of aerobic bins. However, lack of finance management meant that most of the bins became dysfunctional due to need for maintenance.
The city corporation has also begun steps to install waste management units in schools. A decentralized unit will come up at Model school, followed by setting up a unit at Cotton Hill school.
