Ranchi: The Union government on Wednesday revealed that 75% of Jharkhand's iron ore mines are non-functional.
Union minister of state for mines and steel Vishnu Deo, in a written statement presented in the Rajya Sabha, said 12 of 36 iron ore mines in Jharkhand have not been engaged in mining activity. Deo replied to a question posed by Rajya Sabha MP from Jharkhand, Parimal Nathwani, about the status of sick iron ore mines in India.
According to the government's statement, there are 267 non-functioning iron ore mines in India, while 251 are still operating. Jharkhand ranks fourth in terms of non-working iron ore mines in India. Odisha tops the list with 77 non-working iron-ore mines, while Karnataka and Goa ranked second and third with 66 and 40 non-working iron ore mines respectively.
