Malappuram: Amid the controversy over the development of the Aligarh Muslim University's (AMU) Malappuram campus at Perinthalmanna, the central public works department (CPWD) has started the construction of new building for the law department on the campus. The work is estimated at Rs 12.45 crore.
A team of officials led by executive engineer Shri Kant visited the campus two days ago and monitored the site levelling and marking works which began according to the master plan prepared by the department of architecture of AMU main campus in UP, on the acquired land of the campus.
Director of the Malappuram centre Dr H Abdul Azeez said that, a water supply project of one lakh litre capacity will also be undertaken to resolve the water crisis at the centre.
"AMU has already granted approval for a water harvesting plant worth Rs 65 lakh and solar project of Rs 42 lakh on the campus," said the director adding that the tender of the compound wall construction work has also published by CPWD.
Central and the state governments had recently locked horns over the development of Aligarh Muslim University's South India centre at Malappuram. The development of the campus was delayed as the Centre and state blamed each other for the indefinite delay in the development works which started five years ago. The HRD ministry mainly cited underutilization of the Rs 140 crore fund that was sanctioned earlier for the development of the campus as the major reason for the delay in releasing additional funds.
