ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) Chairman Dr Nadeem Amjad congratulated Thatta National Sugar and Tropical Horticulture Research Institute (NSTHRI) Director Dr Abdul Fatah Soomro and his scientists’ team for introducing and releasing two new sugarcane varieties Thatta-2109 and Thatta-326 for commercial cultivation. The PARC chairman was chairing a meeting with senior scientists at PARC Head Quarters on Wednesday. He said that the new sugarcane varieties possess high cane yield and sugar recovery potential and a good addition in existing pool of commercial sugarcane varieties in Sindh as well as in Pakistan. On this occasion, he urged the senior scientists to promote science culture in the PARC system and focus their research to address the problems of small farmers and to overcome the issues affecting the agriculture sector in Pakistan. He said that the incentives would be given to productive scientists in recognition of their achievements in agriculture sector. He further said that the development of the agriculture sector was imperative not only to ensure food security in the country but also to run the agro-based industries; the biggest foreign exchange earner for Pakistan.
