A village in Tapi district of south Gujarat was flooded after a canal carrying waters from Ukai dam broke its banks and inundated houses and agricultural fields on Wednesday. The irrigation department officials diverted the flow of water. They have started repairing the breach and claimed it will be completed on the same day.

According to official sources, over 1,200 cusecs of water from Ukai dam was being discharged for irrigation purpose to the farmers of Khergam, Ambach, Anaval, Rumla, Kamkotar, Kangvai, Sukhrai, etc on Wednesday. Due to the fast flow of water, an existing leakage in the canal structure turned into a big gap, measuring about 30 feet. As a result, water entered into the low-lying areas of the Dhani village, dominated by Halpati community.

The flowing water inundated the standing wheat and sugarcane crops in the neighbouring fields. Dhani village deputy sarpanch Dharmendra Parmar said the Halpatis were the most affected as their kutcha houses were submerged. He said, “Over two feet water was seen in their houses. They had to shift their household items to other homes.” Parmar added, “Fifteen days ago, irrigation department officials had repaired cracks in the canal where the breach happened today. The leakage was not properly repaired as a result of which the incident took place.”
