Thane: The leader of Opposition in the state legislative council Dhananjay Munde and NCP strongman Jitendra Awhad, on Wednesday, assured their support to the residents of Parsik Nagar in their battle with the civic body over the proposed sewage treatment plant (STP).
The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) had proposed to set up the plant at Parsik Nagar.
However, this did not go down well with the residents of the area.
The residents expressed their concerns regarding the STP to the NCP leaders and explained how it could pose a health hazard in the entire area. They appealed that it should be shifted to an open plot near Kharegaon toll post.
The residents threatened to snowball the issue into a major one as over 1,000 families had participated in a peace protest against the STP on Sunday.
“Munde has assured his complete support and has promised that he would speak to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis about this. We are not against the STP, we are only suggesting that the project be shifted near the creek and Munde has assured us that he will look into the issue,” said a resident Pallavi Mulajkar.
The STP, located along the old Mumbai-Pune highway, is supposed to process 46mld of waste when completed. It is part of the seven treatment plants proposed by the TMC.
The residents claimed that the civic body started work on the STP project without informing them about it.
