Corrie fans will be thrilled to know that actress Beverley Callard, who plays Liz McDonald, has returned to the set of the ITV soap, according to reports.

The writers sent Beverley's character to Spain in order to allow the 59-year-old star to take some time out from work to focus on her health.

The departure involved some tough scenes in which Jason Grimshaw (played by departing actor Ryan Thomas) publicly blamed Liz for his father Tony's death from a heart attack.

The funeral scenes for Tony had to be reworked due to the actress's time out.

However, The Mirror reports that the much-loved star is back on the Weatherfield set in Manchester although producers are reportedly mindful of not placing too much pressure on her regarding storylines.

The actress revealed she suffered from depression to Piers Morgan on his Life Stories show in 2014 and said she had even contemplated suicide.

She said: "I tried maybe half a dozen times, but it wasn't a cry for help at all. I'd known for quite a while that I wasn't myself, but I didn't really know what to do about it.

"I was going to work and I was still filming and I didn't really talk to anyone about it and on that day they took me into The Priory in the early hours of the next morning and ... my doctor said, I looked like a 100-year-old woman.

"They tried different medications, but none of them seemed to work."

She also previously told The Mirror that she struggled to keep her battle a secret at work but broke down one day when she felt she didn't have the confidence to portray her ballsy character.

"I was getting worse and worse each day. I was getting ready in my dressing room and I couldn't take it any more. Liz had to be dressed up for a certain scene – she had to wear a PVC outfit," she said.

"Fear took over and I started to cry. I thought, 'I'm not confident enough to put this on. I can't do it".

However, the star revealed to fans that she is seeing a new doctor and has "hope" in her battle with depression.
