CAIRO (Sputnik) – Syria’s Tomorrow emerged in March in a new bid to unite liberal opposition forces under one umbrella organization. It is headed by Ahmad Jarba, the former chief of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, better known as the Syrian National Coalition (SNC).
Russia, as well as the international community, should exert pressure on Syrian President Bashar Assad in order to help maintain ceasefire regime over the whole territory of the republic, the spokesman said.
"There is an agreement on cessation of hostilities, which has been reached under the auspices of Russia and the United States, and backed by the resolution of the UN Security Council. This accord covers all of Syria's territory. The Syrian regime has repeatedly violated this deal. It is necessary to renew the effect of the agreement on the cessation of hostilities <…> International community, particularly Russia, can play a positive role in this issue, putting pressure on [Syrian President Bashar] Assad," Akbik told RIA Novosti.
Apart from the implementation of the ceasefire, it is necessary to intensify the deliveries of humanitarian aid to the civilians of the crisis-torn country, Akbik added.
Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with forces loyal to Assad fighting several opposition factions and terrorist groups.
A ceasefire brokered by Russia and the United States has been in place in Syria since late February. Terrorist organizations are excluded from the ceasefire. The truce was supported by Damascus and dozens of opposition groups. Despite the deal, violence has been escalating in the country in recent weeks, especially in the northern Aleppo region.
Earlier on Wednesday, Russia and the United States found an effective mechanism for observing the ceasefire in Syria by introducing the so-called 'silent' period, according to the Russian Center for Reconciliation head.
