Margao: The Maina-Curtorim police on Tuesday arrested five persons in connection with the violence that took place at Dicarpale, Salcete, late Monday night.
Mousin Jamkhandey, Peter Colaco, Rosario Carvalho, Prakash Naik and Edwin Dias, all locals, were remanded to one day police custody by the local court.
They were arrested under Sections 143 (forming unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapons), 452 (house trespass with intent of assault or wrongful restraint) 427 (mischief causing damage to the tune of 50lakh), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 506 (criminal intimidation), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 436 (mischief by fire or explosive substance), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 8B of the National Highway Act (mischief by injury to national highway).

In a related case, the Maina-Curtorim police on Tuesday, arrested Avinash Gunjikar, the owner of the bar and restaurant, who allegedly assaulted Jason Vales, a team member of the Churchill Brothers, in a bar and restaurant leading to clashes between the two groups. He was arrested under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC and will be placed before the local court to seek his remand to police custody. Police sources said that Vales was allegedly beaten up over previous enmity. The accused then fled the scene.

Police sources said that more arrests are likely, as many of the rioters have already been identified by the police. Three police personnel sustained injuries in the incident – PI Gurudas Kadam, PSI Avin Naik and a cop Prasanna Prabhu Gaonker, police sources said.
The police have also seized 18 vehicles, most of which are two wheelers, found abandoned on the road following police action.
