Surat: Three labourers were thrashed by people in Kothamadi village of Navsari district on Monday. Two of them later died during treatment in a hospital on Tuesday. The labourers were thrashed over their suspected involvement in a rape attempt and murder of a woman belonging to the village. The woman's face and head had been crushed with a stone by her murderers.
Pappu Banvari, 30, and Ramakant Banvari, 35, succumbed to their injuries in a hospital.
Kanta Banvari, 30, who had suffered minor injuries in the attack, survived. The villagers thrashed them on learning about the murder of Pushpa Patel, 42.
The woman's body was found near a rivulet behind a temple in the outskirts of Kothamadi village on Monday afternoon. She had gone to collect grass for cattle but did not return. Her daughter found her body. Soon villagers gathered at the spot and started to look for the suspects. They spotted the three youths in a neighbouring mango farm. Two of them had blood-stained clothes on them.
"When the villagers asked them about their blood-stained clothes, the labourers began to argue. There was a scuffle between them and the labourers were thrashed badly which resulted in the death of two subsequently," said D K Patel, police inspector. Preliminary investigation revealed that both the deceased were involved in the murder while Kanta was not present at the spot. Villagers did not thrash him since he was not involved in the murder, police said.
"The postmortem has not revealed anything, but it seems a rape attempt had been made by the deceased youths on the woman. They murdered her when she resisted them. The blood-stained clothes of the deceased have been found," said Patel.
Police registered two murder complaints relating to the woman and that of the two labourers who have since died.
