Nashik: The academic council of the Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) has decided to restructure the syllabus of its basic degree courses in order to comply with the latesr guidelines of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The changes syllabus will be based on the Choice Based Credit System recently introduced by the UGC. "This would mean that the syllabus would emphasise more on students earning the prescribed number of credits to qualify rather than being herded to come out successfully within the normal stipulated time for the degree," said Pandit Gavli, the in-charge registrar of the university.
YCMOU has become the first among the state universities to start implementing the changes as per the choice based credit system.
"In addition to restructuring of the syllabus, the academic council has also proposed to start BA (vocational studies), a special course to provide vocational training to the students. The study material for the new syllabus is being finalised by the academic council. We have already sent the proposal for the approval in changes of syllabus in 135 courses to the UGC. I hope, new syllabus will be implemented from the academic session 2016-17" Gavli added.
Choice Based Credit System means a system of implementation of academic program in which student is expected to register for courses as per his/her choice as per the rules mentioned in the prospectus for the programs. As a result, the university has initiated a process to publish one single prospectus for all courses from diploma to post-graduation.
"With new syllabus and the choice based credit system, the YCMOU has taken a major step towards creating trained man power for the industries and professional world," Gavli added.
