A scrap for the youth vote

May 04, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - CHENNAI:

One of the key factors that could decide the outcome of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections this time is the vote of the younger generation.

With one out of four voters in the age group of 18-30, the two Dravidian parties, as well as the ‘Third Front’, are banking heavily on this segment of voters, who are yet to identify with one particular party.

Wooing the youth, DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin rebranded himself ahead of the elections, and the power of social media has even brought DMDK leader Vijayakant to Twitter.

Now, the AIADMK has launched a campaign targeting young voters. Aspire’s K. Swaminathan may no longer be heading the party’s IT wing, but he is carrying on with his campaign as a party worker. “Every party worker takes up campaign. Some go on door-to-door verification, some campaign in vans, I continue to use social media as I specialise in leveraging it,” he says.

While the campaign is restricted in Facebook, he says it has been circulated to over five lakh people through WhatsApp. The campaign #ADMKyourself will run for five days beginning Tuesday.
