Cabinet subcommittee’s flying visit to drought-hit areas criticised

May 04, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - Hassan:

H.S. Prakash, MLA for Hassan, has come down heavily on the Cabinet subcommittee for its fleeting visits to drought-hit parts of the district.

“I don’t know how could they understand the severity of the drought by spending two hours in the district,” he said at a press conference here on Tuesday.

The team of Ministers, which included T.B. Jayachandra, H.S. Mahadeva Prasad and others, reached the Hemavathi reservoir in Gorur around 5 p.m., and by the time they reached a MGNREGA worksite, it was already dark, the MLA said.

“They spent hardly a couple of hours in the district. How can they understand the severity of the drought in two to three hours?” he asked.

Regarding the amount released for drought relief works, Mr. Prakash said the government had provided Rs. 50 lakh for every Assembly constituency.

“The amount is insufficient to take up emergency works. The government should release at least Rs. 2 crore for every constituency,” he said.
