Farmers urge political parties to oppose LBP concrete-lining

May 04, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - ERODE:

Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam on Tuesday urged all political parties to jointly oppose the proposal for concrete-lining of Lower Bhavani Project canal, saying it would lead to desertification of agricultural fields to a length of 200 km.

At a meeting here, the farmers’ association said the project will also lead to drying up of as many as 300 smaller water bodies and cause severe drinking water shortage in several places including Sathyamangalam, Gobichettipalayam, Erode, Chennimalai, Nasiyanur, Chithode and Sivagiri in Erode district, and several parts of Tirupur district.

Besides, several lakhs of coconut trees will also dry up since concrete-lining will stop water percolation and ground water recharge, the farmers said.
