Traffic crawled across the capital for the second successive day as diesel cab drivers blocked the Delhi-Noida-Direct (DND) Flyway and the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway to protest against the Supreme Court order banning diesel cabs in the capital.

Nearly 200 drivers blocked the DND at 10 am, bringing traffic to a halt. They parked their vehicles at both ends of the flyway for nearly an hour until senior police personnel convinced them to clear the area.

Anwar Abbasi, DND management spokesperson, said, “The protesters parked their vehicles near the Yamuna bridge and blocked both carriageways. Traffic came to a standstill for 45 minutes. After police intervened, normal traffic flow resumed on the flyway. On Monday, they had protested at the toll plaza and traffic was affected. After police intervened, the situation returned to normal in 20 minutes.”

Sanjay Yadav, superintendent of police (traffic) of Gautam Budh Nagar, said, “Traffic was disrupted on the DND Tuesday morning due to protests by taxi drivers. Our traffic police force reached the spot. Action would have been taken if the protesters had refused to move from the area, but we were able to clear the spot without using force.”

Cab drivers also protested in parts of south Delhi, such as Lado Sarai and Mahipalpur, especially against the impounding of cabs which have All India Tourist Permits.

Festive offer

The protest commenced at Gurgaon and moved to Mahipalpur after police forced demonstrators to disperse. Protesters parked their diesel taxis on the Mahipalpur flyover leading to the Indira Gandhi International Airport. As a result, traffic snarls worsened in south Delhi.

Both Gurgaon and Delhi traffic police had issued traffic advisories on social media sites, warning of heavy traffic due to the protests “Obstruction in traffic on both carriageways from Dhaula Kuan towards Gurgaon due to demonstration by taxi drivers near Rajokri border. Traffic will remain heavy from Radisson Hotel, Mahipalpur towards Gurgaon… Kindly avoid the stretch,” said the Delhi Police in a tweet.

JCP Sharad Aggarwal said, “We tried to reason with the drivers… We said if they had issues with the judicial ruling, they must talk to the government.”
