Detours in place for PWD work

New Delhi: Traffic police have put in place some diversions for those going towards the Nehru Place and Defence Colony flyovers after the Public Works Department (PWD) started repair work on them on Tuesday.
Police said that from Tuesday night, PWD will block one carriageway of both the flyovers and repair their joints.
Till May 21, the agency would keep shut one carriageway-going from the Lodhi Road side to Moolchand- of the Defence Colony flyover.
The traffic coming from both the sides of the flyover will use the other carriageway. In the second phase-May 22 to May 30-the carriageway going from the Moolchand side to the Lodhi flyover will be closed down, and the traffic will be allowed to run on the repaired carriageway.
"To avoid congestion on the Defence Colony flyover, drivers are advised to take Mathura Road, Ashram Chowk, Ring Road, the Moolchand flyover, Lodhi Road, Bhishma Pitamah Marg or Ring Road while commuting from south to central and New Delhi and vice versa," said a traffic police officer. The diversions for the first phase will stay till May 21. For commuters going towards the Nehru Place flyover, alternative routes under the flyover will help them avoid congestion, traffic cops said.

PWD has put up boards, asking commuters to take the alternative routes. However, police officers have warned of traffic jams during peak hours due to BRT dismantling work in some areas. For the Defence Colony flyover, PWD will be coordinating with the Railways as the flyover goes over railway tracks and may affect train movement.
Earlier, a government official had told TOI that the bearings and expansion joints of the two flyovers have to be changed and the deck will have to be raised for that.
