HYDERABAD: The death of two young boys in Adilabad district, apparently from sun stroke resulting from thirst is a result of the state government’s failure to ensure availability of drinking water in rural areas, the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights said.
Taking suo-moto notice of the deaths, the Commission on Tuesday in a communication to the district collector, directed that the incident be inquired into and a report be submitted to the Commission.
The district administration was also told to inform the Commission on the action taken to prevent recurrence of similar incidents and compensation paid to the family.
The Commission directed the collector to submit a report by May 20.
In an incident that reflects the severe drinking water shortages that have beset rural Telangana and the plight of people searching for water to quench their thirst, two boys, Madhukar (12 yrs) and Ashok (8yrs) were found dead in a forested area of Chennur mandal of Adilabad district on Monday.
The boys, on Sunday left from their village Lingampalli along with their mother Eladi Lachu for Buddharam village about 12 km from their village. Lachu, a widow and a daily wage labourer, took her two sons to go to Buddharam where her daughter’s wedding was scheduled for Monday.
The woman and her children began their walk to Buddharam and on the way, the children complained of thirst. In a bid to find some water to drink, Lachu asked her children to stay under a tree and went to a nearby mango orchard to get some water. However, she too was dehydrated by then and fell unconscious in the orchard. It was only late in the evening that some passersby saw the woman and managed to revive her and was informed about her thirsty sons.
However, since it was already dark and mounting a search for the boys was not possible in the forest at that time, some locals who lived near the orchard went on a search on Monday morning and found the two boys dead.
The police said the children apparently died of sun stroke. The bodies of the two children were shifted to the government hospital in Chennur for a post-mortem, the police said.
