PMC offers Rs 392 cr for Pune-Lonavla additional track for local train service

The proposal came through despite initial reluctance as the civic body feared it would make the investment but the revenue would go to the Indian Railways.

In a bid to give the much-needed momentum to develop additional tracks of local trains from Pune to Lonavla, the Pune Municipal Corporation, as per the directions of the Central government, has proposed to allot Rs 392 crore for the project that would improve the local train service on the route.

The proposal came through despite initial reluctance as the civic body feared it would make the investment but the revenue would go to the Indian Railways.

In a proposal tabled before the standing committee, the civic administration informed that the project is required to increase the local train service between Pune and Lonavala, as the existing service is inadequate to meet the demands of increased commuters due to urbanisation. The PMC has been asked to contribute its share of Rs 392 crore for the project, it said.

A few days ago, the PMC traffic department had forwarded the proposal to accounts department for their opinion and to carry out the necessary procedure. However, the accounts department raised queries on it saying the revenue collection would only go to the Indian Railways.

The estimated cost of the project is Rs 2,306 crore and the Mumbai Railway Development Corporation Ltd would be developing the 70 km-rail route. The 50 per cent expenditure would be taken care of by the state and the rest would be done by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
