Jute mill shut
A work-suspension notice was put up at Jagaddal's Anglo India jute mill on Monday, casting a shadow over the fate of its 3,500 workers. A couple of days ago, Kamarhati's Prabartak Jute Mill had been shut due to labour unrest.
On Monday morning, workers of the mill found the notice on the factory gate, which read: "The factory will remain closed for an indefinite period due to low rate of productivity".

Workers launched an agitation in front of the gate.
They alleged that the mill owner was in league with the government and that the closure had taken place immediately after elections got over in North 24-Parganas.
Local Trinamool MLA and INTTUC leader Arjun Singh, however, said there was no link between the mill's operations and the elections. "The mill has shut temporarily and will reopen after renovation. I have asked the management to pay the dues to workers," he said.
Kamduni hearing
The final hearing of the Kamduni rape and murder case will start in Calcutta high court from July 5. The matter came up in the high court on Monday.

The incident dates back to June 7, 2013, when a college student was raped and murdered in Kamduni, in the outskirts of Kolkata.
On January 30 this year, a sessions court sentenced three of the accused to death. Three others were sentenced to life.
Two of the accused were acquitted by the trial court for lack of evidence, but the state has also appealed against their acquittal. Senior counsel Y Z Dastoor will defend the convicts in the high court.
