AURORA — The storms have cleared, at least temporarily, and the regular season ends Saturday. So Regis Jesuit is among the boys lacrosse teams looking for that late push before next week’s postseason seeding is announced.

The Raiders patiently downed Colorado Academy 9-3 on Monday in a Class 5A South Suburban League game as part of another makeup game and were glad to get it in.

“It was a nice day. We were passing the ball around well and finishing our shots, and we’ve haven’t been able to do that lately,” senior midfielder Joey Chott said after scoring three goals for the Raiders.

Longtime coach Jim Soran, whose team improved to 10-2 overall, 4-0 in league and knocked off previously undefeated Mountain Vista last Thursday, said he was glad to have his team back outside and playing, but “we’re still not real crisp offensively and not finishing the ball. And we’ve had trouble with that all year.”

The Raiders outshot the Mustangs 32-22, scored in every period and did not trail. Last season’s state runners-up have won three in a row since falling to defending state champion Cherry Creek in Greenwood Village on April 14 and received goals from six Raiders in addition to Chott. And they’ll be busy — they have three more games this week, beginning with hosting Kent Denver on Wednesday.

Colorado Academy (11-3, 6-1) suffered only its first in-state loss since March 17 and couldn’t overcome assorted issues Monday, coach Randy Colley said.

“(The Raiders) are big, an athletic team and really ruled the middle of the field with faceoffs and ground balls, and the time of possession was not in our favor,” he said. “And that’s not a great recipe for us.”
