Acting on a response to their anti-child labour tweet, the Mumbai Police on Monday raided a restaurant in Chandivali and rescued a minor who was working in the kitchen, and arrested the manager of the establishment.
On Sunday, to mark the occasion of Labour Day, Mumbai Police Commissioner D.D. Padsalgikar, through his official Twitter handle, had tweeted, “Don’t make tiny shoulders carry big responsibilities. Stop child labour.”
The tweet was accompanied by a collage of three pictures showing child labourers at work, with the caption, ‘May 1 is the Unhappy Children’s Day because some child is working somewhere around you today.’
In response to the tweet, a user named Rahul tweeted saying, “I’m a resident of Chandivali. Most of hotels hv young kids working there. They cud b rescued and sent to school.”
The Mumbai Police, through their own Twitter handle, responded to Rahul asking him to send more details on Direct Message, which he did.
Mumbai Police spokesperson DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni said that the information was then passed on to the Social Service Branch of the Mumbai Police Crime Branch, which acts on cases of child labour, and other cases that fall under the purview of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Rajdoot Rupawate, SSB, “Acting on the information, a raid was conducted at Spicy and Curry Coastal Food restaurant in MHADA Colony in Chandivali on Wednesday afternoon. A 15-year-old boy hailing from Nepal was rescued and the manager was arrested.
“The owner of the establishment has been named as a wanted accused in the case, and an offence has been registered with the Saki Naka police in this regard under the JJ Act, 2015.”
