Kochi: Police are awaiting lab reports to ascertain whether the 29-year-old woman whose horribly mutilated body was found on Thursday evening near Perumbavoor — around 40 kms from Kochi, and with the state's highest density of migrant population — was raped.
"It is a case of very violent murder. Though the postmortem report suggests chances of sexual assault or rape, we are waiting for a few laboratory results to confirm the same," Ernakulam rural SP Yathish Chandra G H said.
The woman, a Dalit law student, was found murdered inside her home near an isolated stretch at Vattolippidi canal bund.
There were at least 30 injuries on the victim's body including on her private parts. A police officer said that the major injuries were on the head, back of neck, chest and stomach. The small intestine of the victim had reportedly spilled out due to the force of the injury on her stomach.
The murder came to light when her mother, a manual labourer, returned home by 8.30pm. Police believe the murder took place between 1pm and 8.30pm on Thursday. The victim was found lying naked except for the top portion of her churidar. The victim's father has been living separately for the last 25 years.
