Disgruntled over DMDK leader Vijayakant’s undemocratic move in selecting candidates to contest in the Assembly elections, the party functionaries led by its unit secretary in Puducherry R. Selvaraj joined the Congress on Monday.
The Congress office was abuzz with activities on Monday evening as rumours of six DMDK candidates withdrawing their nominations spread.
Contestants stay in DMDK
Clearing the air, Mr. Selvaraj confirmed that “The six candidates who are contesting the elections in Puducherry have not withdrawn their nominations. Except the candidates, all the 2000 members including 15 State and district leaders and 10 constituency representatives of the party joined the Congress party.”
He added that they did not force the candidates who have filed their nominations since they had already started campaigning. “We have not forced anyone to come along with us to join the Congress I have been part of DMDK party since the beginning. But, the party leadership has failed to give any importance to Puducherry. They have not even allotted a constituency for me . Hence, we decided to quit DMDK and come to the Congress party which is more democratic,” he said.
Even before the DMDK members reached the Congress party office, two AINRC cadres including D. Rajan and Thanga Kalaimaran joined the Congress.
