YSR Congress Party leaders on Monday alleged that the State government failed to ensure drinking water for the people in the scorching summer. The party senior leaders including Varudu Kalyani, Reddi Shanit, MV Padmavati and others agitated in front of Srikakulam Tehsildhar office with empty pots. They alleged that all the water schemes had become defunct, forcing women to walk miles together to fetch water in spite of summer heat. Ms.Varudu Kalyani said all 38 mandals in the district were under the grip of drought and the situation would be worst further if the government failed to take up relief measures. Rajam MLA Kambala Jogulu organised the agitation at Rajam Tehsildhar’s office. Party leader Gorle Kirankumar who participated in the dharna at Etcherla said the people would teach a lesson the government soon.

Special Correpondent adds from Kurnool:

YSR Congress functionaries demonstrated with empty pitchers in Kurnool and Kadapa districts alleging the State Government’s negligence in extending drought relief.

Panyam MLA Gauru Charitha Reddy, her husband Gauru Venkata Reddy and party activists staged a dharna in front of Kallur Tahsildar’s office in Kurnool. YSRC MLA S. Aijaiah led the protest in Nandikotkur, while party activists demonstrated before the Baganapalle, Pathikonda and Yemmiganur Tahsildar offices in Kurnool district.

In Kadapa district, YSRC district president and former MLA A. Amarnath Reddy led the protest at Rajampet. The protest by partymen carrying empty pitchers was led by MLA P. Ravidranath Reddy at Kamalapuram, MLA S.B. Amjad Basha and Mayor K. Suresh Babu in Kadapa and party leader Sudheer Reddy in Jammalamadugu. YSRC functionaries also staged protests before the Nandalur and Vontimitta Tahsildar offices in Kadapa district.

Correspondent from Vizianagaram adds:

Braving the hot sun, a large number of women led by YSRC town committee president G. Satyalata and secretary of the district committee B. Dhanalakshmi staged a dharna with empty pitchers at the Municipal Office in Vizianagaram.

YSRC district president and MLC Kolagatla Veerabhadra Swamy, who participated in the protest, said that under ‘NTR Sujala Sravanti’ Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu had promised to supply 20 litres of mineral water at Rs. 2 to each household but he had now failed even to supply at least a litre of contaminated water.

Further, he said that the government had no control over the soaring prices of essential commodities. Later, he submitted a memorandum to Municipal Commissioner Nagaraju.

At other places in the district, the party cadres and leaders staged similar protests.
