Trendy Togs for Kabali

Turns out, Rajinikanth's wardrobe choices in Kabali were the result of a pre-condition between the actor and filmmakers.

Thalaivar’s last two films Kochadaiyaan and Linga were resounding flops. The Rajiniphiles are perplexed. How can God go wrong? Kabali, directed by Pa Ranjith, whose last film Madras was a semi-experimental success, is a made-to-order Rajini vehicle.

Kabali reverses whatever could have possibly gone wrong in the last two films. Unlike Kochadaiyaan and Linga, it is not a costume drama. Apparently the director and writers were very specifically told to put the Superstar into very trendy togs.

Says a source from the team, “Rajini sir and his daughters clearly told the team there would be no going back in time! The film not only had to be contemporary in setting, but also had to allow him to wear finely-cut suits and other formal wear for the first time in his career. Hence, it is designed as a gangster flick with the cool quotient raised higher than in any Rajinikanth-starrer.”

More money has been spent on Superstar’s wardrobe in this film, than in any other film. The other pre-condition while conceiving the project was to ensure the plot remains focused on the hero.

“Rajini sir’s fans do not enjoy watching too much footage being devoted to other characters. Even his co-star Radhika Apte has much less to do this time than Sonakshi Sinha and Anushka Shetty did in his last film,” says the source.
Kabali is all set to get the biggest-ever release for a Rajinikanth film on May 27.
