Division 1

Nottinghamshire v Yorkshire

Rain had its say yet again on Day 2 as Yorkshire continued their fightback through opener Alex Lees who struck an unbeaten 91 off just 130 deliveries. He survived an excellent opening spell from Jake Ball who reduced the visitors to 24 for three by the seventh over. England internationals Gary Ballance and Joe Root were among his victims.

Jonny Bairstow then put up 83 for the fourth wicket alongside Lees before getting trapped in front by Harry Gurney for 29. Skipper Andrew Gale was unbeaten on 21 at the close of play.

Brief Scores: Nottinghamshire 261 (Steven Mullaney 78, Michael Lumb 49; Jack Brooks 4-74, Adil Rashid 3-29) lead Yorkshire 170 for 4 (Alex Lees 91*, Jonny Bairstow 29, Jake Ball 3-40)

Somerset v Lancashire

Lancashire batsman Liam Livingstone, who grabbed the headlines last year after smashing 350 off 138 balls in a club match, hit his maiden first-class hundred to put his side on top against Somerset. He remained unbeaten until the end on 108 before Lancashire declared on 493. Having already scored 70 in his debut innings, the 22-year-old played some crisp strokes on a day that was interrupted by rain.

Veteran opener Marcus Trescothick and Tom Abell safely negotiated six overs before the close of play. The visitors will now have to pick up 20 wickets over the next two days in order to force a result.

Brief Scores: Lancashire 493 for 9 dec (Liam Livingstone 108*, Steven Croft 94, Roelof van der Merwe 3-87) lead Somerset 14 for 0 by 479 runs

Hampshire v Middlesex

On a rain-hit day at the Rose Bowl in Southampton, Middlesex fought back via Dawid Malan after Hampshire finished their first innings on 336 and earned three quick breakthroughs with the ball. At stumps on Day 2, Middlesex were 84 for 3, still trailing Hampshire by 252 runs.

Brief Scores: Hampshire 336 (Michael Carberry 107, Liam Dawson 89; Tim Murtagh 3-64, Toby Roland-Jones 3-87) lead Middlesex 84/3 (Dawid Malan 40; Ryan McLaren 2-25) by 252 runs

Surrey v Durham

Surrey continued to pile on the runs on Day 2, finishing on 457 with Gareth Batty chipping in with a useful 40 at No. 9. In reply, Mark Stoneman and Keaton Jennings gave Durham a solid start by scoring fifties but were both dismissed after going past the landmark. Bad light ended play early, with Durham on 156 for 2, trailing by 301 runs.

Brief Scores: Surrey 457 (Arun Harinath 96, Steven Davis 87, Jason Roy 64; Ben Stokes 4-117) lead Durham 156/2 (Mark Stoneman 57, Keaton Jennings 53; Gareth Batty 1-23) by 301 runs

Division 2

Northamptonshire v Derbyshire

Shiv Thakor combined with the tail to add valuable runs to Derbyshire's overnight total of 275 and remained unbeaten on 83 when his side was bundled out for 324. Jake Libby and Ben Duckett, the Northamptonshire openers, started well before rain played spoilsport at the County Ground, Northampton.

Brief Scores: Derbyshire 324 (Shiv Thakor 83, Tony Palladino 49, Rory Kleinveldt 3-58, Ben Sanderson 2-53) lead Northamptonshire 60 for 0 (Jake Libby 28, Ben Duckett 36) by 258 runs

Worcestershire v Essex

Alastair Cook scored his third century of the season while Tom Westley also breached the three-figure mark as Essex finished Day 2 at New Road, Worcester on 335 for 2.

Brief Scores: Essex 335 for 2 (Tom Westley 125, Alastair Cook 130*, Matt Henry 1-30) vs Worcestershire

Kent v Glamorgan

Daniel Bell-Drummond added just 22 runs to his Day 2 tally but Kent were buoyed by the fact that four other batsmen slammed fifties as the hosts tormented Glamorgan to reach 488, a lead of 228 runs. In their second essay, Glamorgan lost skipper Jacques Rudolph early and finished on 16 for 1 at stumps in St Lawrence Ground, Canterbury.

Brief Scores: Glamorgan 260 & 16/1 trail Kent 488 (Daniel Bell-Drummond 84, Joe Denly 58, Darren Stevens 58, Tom Latham 53; Michael Hogan 4-91) by 212 runs

Sussex v Leicestershire

Paul Horton's century and skipper Mark Cosgrove's 80 helped Leicestershire extend their lead to 137 runs over Sussex on Day 2 at County Ground in Hove. At stumps, Mark Pettini (42 not out) and Niall O'Brien were in the middle.

Brief Scores: Sussex 163 (Ed Joyce 56, Ben Raine 4-30, Wayne White 3-25) trail Leicestershire 300 for 4 (Paul Horton 100, Mark Cosgrove 80; George Garton 2-92) by 137 runs
