Cardinals pitcher sued for knowingly spreading STDs

It says STL on Carlos Martinez’s cap. Maybe STD would be more appropriate.

The St. Louis Cardinals right-hander is the object of a civil lawsuit accusing the 24-year-old of negligent transmission of a sexual transmitted disease.

The lawsuit, filed in Miami by an alleged former paramour, seeks more than $1.5 million in damages. According to TMZ, the woman states in the lawsuit she began to feel sick a few days after resuming an on-again, off-again sexual relationship with Martinez last December — and later tested positive for multiple, non-life-threatening STDs.

Martinez “swore to God that he was not infected with any sexually transmitted disease” before they hooked up, the lawsuit claims, and did not respond to phone calls after being informed of the woman’s illness.

Martinez’s attorney, Ruben Scolavino, denied the allegations to TMZ: “I can tell you most assuredly the allegations are 100 percent false.”

Martinez started Sunday against the Washington Nationals — he took the loss after allowing four runs in 6 2/3 innings — after leaving the team earlier in the week to travel to Miami. General manager John Mozeliak said Saturday he was aware of the case, but was unsure whether Martinez would be investigated under MLB’s domestic violence policy.

“We wait. And once we learn more, then we’ll have more of an idea,” Mozeliak said, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “These are things you just learn as you go.”
