Biker, 23, dies after crashing into divider

A Byculla resident, Swagat Lokhande, 23, who was out on a late-night ride with two of his friends, died after he rammed his motorbike into a road divider in Worli around 4 am on Sunday. His friends, both riding pillion, suffered fractures in the right leg, the Worli police said.

Lokhande and his friends, Viraj, 22, and Krishna Gawade, 22, were headed home when their bike crashed into a divider on the Annie Besant Road. The police said that Lokhande died on the spot, while Viraj and Krishna have been admitted to the Nair Hospital, and their condition is reported to be stable.

“The youths had a long ride along the Worli Sea Face, and were headed home when the accident occurred. Lokhande has been booked under the Indian Penal Code sections 304A (causing death due to negligence), 338 (endangering life or safety of others) and 279 (rash driving), besides sections 184 (driving dangerously) and 128 (carrying more than one pillion rider) of the Motor Vehicle Act,” an officer from Worli Police Station said.

The police said that additional sections will be applied if it is proved that Lokhande was riding under the influence of alcohol. “Medical reports are awaited to determine whether Lokhande was drunk. We will add a few sections if that’s the case,” Senior Inspector Vinay Kulkarni from Worli Police Station said.
