Galway SHC: Joe Canning fires winner as Portumna squeeze home

Joe Canning, returning after missing his first game through injury since his debut for Portumna 12 years ago, hit the winner in their hard-fought 0-16 to 1-12 win over Liam Mellows in the Galway Senior A Championship Group 2 clash at Kenny Park.

Conor Kavanagh scored a first-half goal for Liam Mellows as they led 1-10 to 0-9 but late points from Sean Heagney and Canning, who hit six, saved the day for the 2014 All-Ireland champions.

Paul Killilea and Michael Mullins bagged the goals for Gort in their 2-14 to 1-14 victory over reigning champions Sarsfields in Duggan Park.

Killilea struck early for Gort and they led 1-8 to 0-9 at half-time. Mullins scored their second goal shortly after the interval and Niall Morrissey’s penalty was in vain for the champions.

Galway forward Niall Healy hit 0-9, and a late Michael Farrell goal helped Craughwell secure their first win, as they beat Padraig Pearses 1-21 to 0-15 at Kenny Park.

Kevin Keane made it two goals in two weeks as Castlegar made it back to back wins with a 2-15 to 0-12 win over Turloughmore at Pearse Stadium. Last year’s All-Ireland winning minor Jack Coyne also found the net.

Galway senior Iarla Tannian scored a goal for Ardrahan, but Jarlath Mannion hit a hat-trick for Cappataggle in their 6-20 to 1-11 win at Duggan Park. Eanna Garvey, Mark Loughnane, and Ronan Garvey also scored goals for a rampant Cappataggle side.

Niall Keary was superb from placed ball, and his 10 points helped Loughrea to a second win of the campaign, with a 0-14 to 1-10 victory over St Thomas’ at Kenny Park.

In the B Section, Galway star Jason Flynn notched 1-11 for Tommy Larkins as they beat Moycullen 1-17 to 1-9 in Athenry, Niall Mannion netted for Moycullen. Shane Maloney, Padraig Robinson, Paul Gordon and Colm Larkin goaled in Tynagh-Abbey/Duniry’s 4-13 to 1-12 win over Kilnadeema/Leitrim.
