Superstar frenzy took over social media on Sunday with the release of the much-awaited teaser of Rajinikanth’s Kabali , directed by Pa. Ranjith, which will see the actor essay the titular role.

The one-minute-seven-second teaser shows snapshots of his life as a gangster and also has scenes depicting him in a retro avatar, which fans described on Twitter as the highlight and a refreshing throwback to the earlier films of Rajinikanth.

Kabali is also seen saying “Magizhchi” — a word that director Pa. Ranjith had been using over the year on Twitter for every announcement related to the movie. Within 20 minutes of its release, the teaser had garnered over 40,000 views on YouTube.

Producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu also tweeted about the teaser reaching one million views. Directors S.S. Rajamouli, Karthik Subbaraj, Balaji Mohan, actor Dhanush, Sivakarthikeyan and Dulquer Salmaan were among those who reacted to the teaser and spoke about the film online.

#KabaliTeaser trended on Twitter for most of Sunday and the movie was also among the top trends on Facebook after the makers released a new poster ahead of the teaser release on Saturday. Rajinikanth’s last film, Lingaa , which released in December 2014, had earned mixed reviews from fans and critics.

Kabali sees him playing an ageing don and has an ensemble cast comprising Radhika Apte, Attakathi Dinesh, Kalaiarasan, Dhansika, John Vijay and Kishore. With music scored by Santhosh Narayanan, most part of the movie is reported to have been shot in Malaysia .
