Akola:The old ghost of water shortage during summer has come back to haunt Akola residents again. Over eight lakh citizens of the city will now get drinking water once every six days on account of water storage in Katepurna dam. Only 5 million cubic metres water is available and the capacity will be further reduced after providing water to 64 villages in the vicinity.
A decision to this effect has been taken by the water department of Akola Municipal Corporation (AMC). The time table of providing water to Akola city after four days collapsed as the water department is struggling to meet the demand for water.
At the railway station here, a Hanuman Temple trustee has installed a machine that dispenses a litre of water for Rs2. To overcome the water crisis in Malegaon area, the public has raised 30,000 for deepening the Nalganga tank.
The basin of the tank has become shallow due to silting. People from all walks of life are cooperating for deepening the tank so as to save water in future.
In the meanwhile, farmers are trying to save fruit orchards in Washim district. Thousands acres of orange crop is drying due to water shortage at Mungla village in Washim district.
