Chandigarh: A debt-ridden man killed his wife, son and daughter before attempting suicide at Dholpalia village, Sirsa district on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.
Mahinder Kumar slit the throats of his wife Sunita, 37, son Rahul, 12 and daughter Palak, 8 while they were asleep. The three died on the spot. Their bodies were found lying on blood soaked cots in the courtyard of the house.
Thereafter Mahinder tried to commit suicide by consuming poisoned ghee and ran out of the house.
He also washed the spade he used to commit the crime and went to a relative's house. He fell unconscious and was rushed to the Sirsa civil hospital. His condition was stated to be critical till the filing of this report. The three bodies were handed over to next of kin after postmortem examinations. DSP Kuldeep Singh said a case of murder has been registered against Mahinder and his brother Rajiv alias Kalu on the complaint of Sunita's father.
A case has been registered on the complaint of his wife's parents, who accused Mahinder and his brother. Mahinder made a statement before the duty magistrate taking the blame.
He informed the magistrate that he was mentally unwell and was under medication. He confessed to have killed wife and children. "As informed by villagers, we are trying to ascertain the debt angle. He owns 3.5 acres of land and is a lower middle class farmer," said the DSP.
