India Premier League 2016, Gujarat Lions vs Kings XI Punjab: As it happened

Hello and welcome to the Highlights from Match 28 of the Indian Premier League between Gujarat Lions and Kings XI Punjab. (LIVE Scorecard)

Updates:

Gujarat Lions innings:

It's fair to say Vijay has turned it around for Punjab. The newly-appointed skipper led from the front with the bat and scored a 41-ball 55 to take Punjab to 155, which looked a nothing score for Gujarat before their batters stepped on the field. However, Mohit Sharma and Axar Patel picked up seven wickets between them to hand Gujarat a thrashing. Axar picked up the first hat-trick of the season as well. One of the rarest days on which Gujarat Lions batting has failed to fire. Kings XI were pumped up today and should look to carry forward today's good work. (Points Table)

Preview:

Gujarat Lions will look to improve their net run rate and also consolidate their top spot when they host Kings XI Punjab at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot today.

The Lions have won six of the seven matches they have played so far and are at the top of the standings with 12 points. Punjab on the other hand, are lying at the bottom of the table with only two points from six matches.

Gujarat have an explosive batting line-up spearheaded by openers Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith. McCullum has made 218 runs in seven matches while Smith, who replaced injured Aaron Finch, has scored 148 runs in just three matches. Gujarat captain Skipper Suresh Raina and Dinesh Karthik are also in good form.

The Gujarat bowling has also been effective with pacers Praveen Kumar and Dhawal Kulkarni in good form along with James Faulkner. Ravindra Jadeja and Dwyane Bravo have also done well.

Out-of-sorts Punjab will be keen to get their campaign back on track after a poor season so far. They have appointed Murali Vijay as skipper, replacing out-of-form David Miller. So far, the team has managed to win just one game and is languishing at the bottom of the points table.

Openers Vijay and Manan Vohra have done well, scoring 143 and 161, respectively in six matches. But the rest of the batting line-up, including Miller and 'Big Show' Glenn Maxwell, has been a disappointment. Shaun Marsh is the only consistent performer in the middle-order with 158 runs in five games.

KXIP's bowling too has been a flop this season. Sandeep Sharma has struggled to weave his magic with the new ball, Mitchell Johnson is not lethal anymore and Kyle Abbott has failed to impressive.
