Gumla: The district administration is trying to fast-track the process of providing water connection pipelines to urban households, which are facing acute crisis. The pipelines will be distributed under the urban water supply scheme.
The administration organized a special camp on May 2 and invited applications for pipeines. Gumla DC Shrawan Sai, who has directed nagar parishad officials to work on war footing, said, "Other formalities will be done later, but supply should be ensured first."
Two water towers, one in Karamtoli (12 lakh litres) and the other in Dunduria (10 lakh litres), have been built under the urban scheme.
Both will store water from Nagfeni plant.
"Applications for water pipeline have to be sent to the nagar parishad office and technical sanction for the same will be given by the drinking water and sanitation department," said Ram Oraon, assistant engineer at Nagfeni.
The population of Gumla has jumped to 60,000 from only 10,000 in the 1970s. Dunduria and Chetar are the driest areas in Gumla, but other wards are also witnessing the same plight this year as all sources of water have dried up.
Meanwhile, tender for renovation of the district's main dams — Katri in Gumla block, Dhanshri in Basia, Masaria in Ghaghra block — is complete, the DC said. The Upper Sankh dam project is also complete.
